Questions and Answers

Who are we?As a small team of dedicated professionals, we are passionate about helping individuals understand their strengths and overcome barriers to learning. We are proud to offer a personal service built on genuine relationships, practical guidance and ongoing support when needed. 'At the heart of our work is a simple belief: an assessment is the start of an empowering journey.' What is the purpose of an assessment? An assessment  report can make a significant  difference to a child or adult. It can be used for school, college, University Disabled Students' applications, DWP Access to Work Evidence and as evidence  towards the Education, Health and Care Needs assessment process. Diagnostic dyslexia assessment s are carried out by Denise, who has over 23 years experience, a Masters Degree in Education, and an Assessment Practicing Certificate, awarded by Patoss. Denise has extensive experience working with children  who have autistic spectrum disorder and ADHD and assessments are tailored accordingly.Support Beyond an AssessmentWhile an assessment provides valuable answers and comprehensive recommendations, we recognise that questions arise as people journey through life. We are thrilled that many of our clients stay in touch for years, sharing their successes, seeking further advice or discussing the next stage of their educational or professional journey. What are the Signs of Dyslexia?Typically, there are difficulties with aspects of writing, spelling and/or reading. Difficulties may be present with accuracy and/or with  speed of working. However, adults and children,  especially those who have strong abilities, often use compensatory strategies which can mask many difficulties (but which may result in mental fatigue). Click here for more information. What will a child gain  from an Assessment?  Children, who are beginning to notice that they are not 'keeping up' with their classmates in some areas,  often begin to lose confidence. An assessment helps them understand their difficulties and celebrate their strengths. The extensive recommendations given in our dyslexia reports helps parents and educators to put the right support in place. Dyslexia is classed as a disability under the Equality Act 2010.  About Us and Testimonials).Assessment reports adhere to the strict criteria set by SASC, the Specific Learning Difficulties standards setting group. Our reports have been commended by Patoss for their high quality as well as by schools and clients for the extensive recommendations given. ADHD and DCD screenings  can be added to assessments for adults for educational and work purposes. For children, ADHD and DCD/Dyspraxia screenings optionally added to a dyslexia assessment are for GP referral purposes. You can check your assessor's registration on the SASC website. 8-15 inclusive FULL ASSESSMENTSAssessments are available face-to-face or via Zoom and carry the same validity.  Assessments via Zoom have mini-breaks built in (suitable for children over 10 and adults who need movement breaks). Screenings are via Zoom. Children are given lots of positive encouragement and stickers throughout. Their  favourite teddy or mascot can 'join in' for extra stickers (posted for Zoom assessments). We do not carry out diagnostic assessments for 7 year olds unless there is compelling evidence that dyslexia may be present. It is better to wait until the age of 8, when we are able to use a wider range of tests which can be used for a reliable diagnosis. Assessors can only use SASC listed tests. We can assess 7 year olds and give recommendations to support learning. If you are not sure whether  to book an assessment with ADHD or dyspraxia/DCD screening included, please do call us for guidance, book a free Zoom consultation or complete the  ADHD and/or DCD checklist and return to us for feedback.  A screening gathers in-depth evidence for a medical referral. A letter is provided for any school/college absence  as it is an authorised absence. We see first hand the difference an assessment makes to your child's educational progress  and emotional well being. If would like to discuss an  assessment, please contact us for advice or book a free Zoom consultation with Denise. Adult (16+) FULL ASSESSMENTSFull diagnostic dyslexia assessments with optional ADHD/Dyspraxia screenings are carried out face-to-face or via Zoom. Complete the Adult Rating Scale for ADHD or Dyspraxia/DCD checklist and return to us for guidance about the need for in depth screening or book a free Zoom consultation with Denise.  If your workplace is paying for your assessment, please find a date you would like and then email us (as if you book online you will be asked for a deposit).Cost of Living: payments can be made in instalments in a way that suits you, once you have your invoice. Always quote your invoice number when making a payment.  If you feel you might qualify for financial support, ask us about charities that may be able to help. Tel: 0800 193 67 87 or email office@coast-education.co.ukThis is your About page.
